7.2 Viscera Flashcards
Role of mesentery
1) mobility
2) a pathway for nerves & vessels
Referred pain
perception of pain in areas other than the site of stimulation, usually due to a common spinal segmental origin of the nerves to the site of stimulation and the site to which the pain is referred.
Referred pain in unpaired viscera
What type of blood and nerve supply do they receive?
Midline viscera develop from each side of the body and fuse in the midline.
They receive a bilateral vascular and nerve supply.
referred to the corresponding area of skin over the midline of the body
bc impulses are simultaneously received by both sides of the particular spinal cord segment
Referred pain in paired viscera
Pain from paired viscus referred to skin on same side
Structure and the functions of the structures of hollow viscera
Serosa (s-superficial, outer layer)
minimises friction
Usually derived from lining of body cavities
Muscularis-middle
smooth muscle, can produce waves of contraction – ‘peristalsis’
Mucosa (internal layer)-folds that increase SA for absorption
What are the 2 types of unpaired viscera?
What are their difference?
Midline unpaired viscera
supply urinary & genital systems
non-midline unpaired viscera
in the pelvic cavity belong to the GI tract
How did the midline unpaired viscera develop?
What nerve and blood vessels are they supplied by?
The midline unpaired viscera developed by fusion from each side of the body, receiving a set of vascular and nerve supply lines from each side.
Midline unpaired viscera are supplied by systemic vessels and visceral nerves from both sides.
