712 I Experienced And Realized The Fact That..더라(고요) Flashcards
더라(고요) used when telling someone a new fact you found out by experiencing (seeing, finding, realize)
춥더라!= (I realized by feeling that) It’s cold!
Adjective stem stays the same
예쁘더라! = (i learned/realized by seeing her/it that) She’s pretty/It’s pretty!
When using 더라 it used with past actions because obviously you already experienced it
You could say 추워요! instead of 춥다라! But 추워요 is more basic/simple.
가방이 무거워(heavy) simple fact “the bag is heavy”
가방이 무겁더라 has direct experience to be able to say it’s heavy. Has a more complex nuance
더라 s 더라고 vs 더라고요
다라 telling a fact based on what you experienced but more exclamatory
더라고 the tone is calmer and less exited and less conclusive
더라고요 makes it polite
나는 그거 좋더라 (i experienced that and found out the fact that) I liked it! [very excited]
나는 그거 좋더러고 (i experienced that and found out the fact that) I like it. [calm/neutral]
How to change into 존댓말
더라고 just add 요 (remember it’s calmer)
더라 you change it completely to 던데요. 빠르더라 — 빠르던데요 (remember it’s exited)
ps. can change 던데요 back to 반말 by removing 요 (it’s tiny bit more formal that 더라?)
던데 =더라 (similar)
Note 던데 comes from 그런데
Show a surprise response when eating say “맛있인데?!” Better you thought “however”
I
Note* 더라 normally doesn’t work with statements about your own will or action or taking ab yourself
Ex: I woke up in the morning, and I was busy. X ( sounds like you left your own body and observed yourself )
But you can use 더라 about own emotions but (normally) not others UNLESS you use the verb form (하) Ex: 경은 씨가 기쁘더라(glad) (this means IM happy for kyeongueun) X 경은 씨가 기뻐하더라. O
(When you said that I experienced that)I’m worried 걱정되더러!
And..
Cannot use 더라 if you have not experienced, seen or read something ab yourself
Ex: I went to the concert and realized the singer was good. O I didn’t go to the concert and realized the singer was good X
Clearly doesn’t make sense in either language
I walk to school
내가 학교에 걸어가더라 (walk to/go to) is wrong because you didn’t experience anything
But you could say
학교에 걸어가는 것이(게) 힘들거라 (I learned from my experience) walking to school is hard
Telling listener this thing I’m telling you came from my first hand experience
다라(고)(요) can be attached to a verb, adjectives, or 이다
Adjectives
다른 데보다 비싸더라 (I saw that) it’s more expensive than other/different places
Verbs
한국학생들아 공부를 열심히 하더라 (i learned the fact that) Korean students study hard
이다
이 고기는 국내산 이더라 this meat is homegrown
라 (old principal not really used now) but states a fact or current situation
Only time 라 comes up like this is with 아니라
더 recalling memories from the past and report
하더라 vs 했더라 (and other words) have subtle differences
어제 비가 오더라 personally saw the rain falling
어제 비가 왔더라 personally saw that it rained but didn’t actually see it raining
maybe you experienced the wet ground
However present tense before 더라 is often used more unless the situation calls for it
In conclusion 었/았/였 used with recalling the experience that had completed by the time u witnessed it
Also past is used just as normal if the thing experienced happened in the past use past obviously
머리를 염색했더라 “she dyed her hair” or “I saw her hairs dyed her hair but I didn’t see her do it”
A good translation for ㅆ더라 is “had”
I saw that it had/has rained 비가 왔더라
남친이 식당에서 밥을 다 먹었더라 I saw that my bf ate all his food/I saw that my bf had eaten all his food (but didn’t actually see him eating) at the restaurant
남친이 식당에서 밥을 먹더라 i experienced (saw) my bf eating at the restaurant
Common to use 더라 to ask a question to usually yourself (similar to 구나 is telling self but might be expected a response and 지(question to self about unknown clause))
빵이 얼마였더라? U knows how much the bread cost but forgot (experienced the price in the past) maybe you bought bread and came home and realized you have less money left than you thought, you could say this to self or out loud hoping the person who went to the store with you will answer/knows
But if you simply have no clue/or experience with how much some random bread costs you can just say 빵이 얼마였어요 (얼마이었어요 -이다)
슬기가 어디 갔더라? I at some point was aware of where seulgi went, but I forgot.
슬기가 어디 갔어? I have no idea wheee she went
If a girl is walking past NOW you cannot say 예쁘더라 because you haven’t finish experiencing it
To recap
더라 excitedly/strong/certain I experienced something
더라고 neural/calmly i experienced something
더라고요 formal neural/calmly i experienced something
던데요 formal of 더라 excitedly I experienced something
In other words 더라요 doesn’t exist/sounds weird
Also 던데 (without 요) and 더라 are similar and interchangeable
빠르던데(요) i experienced that it’s fast (excitedly/formal)
더라 (and varieties) used at the end of the sentence
Make you voice sound less exited when using 더라고 since it’s the calmer/ less conclusive version
윤아 씨한테 물어봤는데, 모르더라
Or 던데요 or 더라고
I asked Yuna but I (Experienced) she didn’t know
