Who are The First Christians?
They were ordinary people that proclaimed the resurrection and triumph of Jesus.
What is persecution?
An action that causes suffering or injury to others because of their beliefs.
Who is Saint Stephen?
He was one of the seven ordained deacons (member of the clergy) in the early Church. He became the first martyr of the Church.
Why did the Jews resent Stephen?
Because he was too wise to argue against. They bribed witnesses to lie about him, claiming he had spoken to God.
What role did Saul play in the death of Stephen?
He was present at his death, and approved of his stoning, this led on to become a major turning point for Saul.
Who is Nero?
He was the emperor of Rome who launched a fierce persecution of Christians.
When did the persecution of Christians end?
When the Battle of the Milvian bridge took place and the taking of Rome by Constantine’s armies.
What is Ascension?
The ascent of Christ into heaven on the fortieth day after the Resurrection.
When did Constantine march toward Rome and what did he intend to do?
He marched to Rome on October 312 CE, and he intended to gain control of the Roman Empire.
What vision did Constantine have while praying to the Christian God?
He had a vision of a glowing cross in the sky appearing and saying “in this sign you will conquer”.
How did Constantine’s vision help him win the battle against the Roman army?
He marked Christ’s monogram on the soldier’s shields, which led him to believe that God had saved the day and granted him victory.
What happened after Constantine’s success in conquering the Roman Empire?
He arranged to meet with the Eastern Roman Emperor, Licinius, in Milan. They issued the Edict of Milan in 313 CE which granted freedom of religion to all people throughout the Roman Empire.
