Q

Describe the association between educational level and health status

Q

How does geographic location (rural and inner-city) effect health status?

A

Rural counties often have less access to care, have higher risk occupations, and higher risk in recreational activities (ATVs, snowmobiles, etc.) and therefore have lower health status.
With larger cities, people who live in the inner city have a lower life expectancy and have lower health status than those who live in the suburbs.

Q

What are some health status disparities in KS?

A

SE KS and Wyandotte are high in negative health factors and health outcomes.
- generally those who have poor health factors have poor outcomes.
- Scott county have poor outcome, but good risk factors
Scott county has more elderly living there, so their outcomes are poor because obviously old people are going to be more sick and die sooner.
- Seward has good outcomes, but poor risk factors
this is possibly because Seward county has a lot of young people coming in to work the factories and young people are always more healthy

Q

How did multiple risk factors lead to adverse outcome in the Hurricane Katrina and Chicago Heat Wave

A

Hurricane Katrina:
50% of Katrina evacuees in Houston had no health insurance. 41% of evacuees reported chronic health conditions
Chicago Heat Wave:
Severe health wave, and the majority of the people that died were old and poor. Death was based on community characteristics (i.e. communities with death didn’t have shopping centers and people didn’t get out or talk to their neighbors. communities with higher survival had shopping centers where they could get some AC and had neighbors checking up on them)
