Stages of normal development in adolescence
Early: onset of puberty. concern with body. separates from family. peer importance. concrete thinking (just black and white)
Middle: (around age 15/16) puberty is usually complete. peers set standards. family values still persist somewhat. increased independence. SOME abstract thinking
Late: (after age 15/16) physical maturation complete. body image, gender role definition secure. nearly emancipated (some fully). cognitive development complete. usually have some life goal
what does HEEADSSS stand for?
Home, Education and Employment, Eating, Activities, Drugs, Sex and Sexuality, Suicide/Emotional Health, and Safety

3 steps of puberty in girls (in order)
- Thelarche: asymmetrical breast development
- Pubarche: start having other puberty changes
- Menarche: menstruation
- usually takes about 4 years
Stages of sexual maturity in girls
5 stages ranging from pre-adolescent (stage 1) to around 14 years (stage 5) that increases breast size and pubic hair throughout
Puberty in boys
- takes about 3 years
- 98% of boys have the first event as testicular enlargement, then enlargement of the penis, then hair growth

5 stages ranging from preadolescent (stage 1) to mature adult size (stage 5) that increase testes size, penis size, and hair growth throughout
Describe how to interview an adolescent
- use very open questions!
- don’t start with asking them direct questions that are hard. ask if their friends have done these things
