64z-64e Flashcards
ἆρα μὴ ἄλλο τι ἢ τὴν τῆς ψυχῆς ἀπὸ τοῦ σώματος ἀπαλλαγήν; καὶ εἶναι τοῦτο τὸ τεθνάναι, χωρὶς μὲν ἀπὸ τῆς ψυχῆς ἀπαλλαγὲν αὐτὸ καθ᾽ αὑτὸ τὸ σῶμα γεγονέναι, χωρὶς δὲ τὴν ψυχὴν ἀπὸ τοῦ σώματος ἀπαλλαγεῖσαν αὐτὴν καθ᾽ αὑτὴν εἶναι; ἆρα μὴ ἄλλο τι ᾖ ὁ θάνατος ἢ τοῦτο;
“Surely it is nothing else than the release of the soul from the body? And being dead is this, that the body has come to be apart, released from the soul, itself in itself, and the soul is apart, released from the body, itself in itself. Surely death is nothing else than this?”
τοιάσδε, οἷον σιτίων τε καὶ ποτῶν;
ἥκιστα, ὦ Σώκρατες, ἔφη ὁ Σιμμίας.
τί δὲ τὰς τῶν ἀφροδισίων;
Οὐδαμῶς.
“No, but this,” said he.
“Just consider, my friend, if the things that seem good to me seem good to you also. [64d] For from these [things] I think we will know more about the things we are looking into. Does it seem to you to be of a man who is a philosopher to have been eager about those things that are called pleasures, such as [the pleasures] of eating and drinking?”
“Not in the least, Socrates,” said Simmias.
“How about [the pleasures] of sex?”
“In no way.”
τί δὲ τὰς ἄλλας τὰς περὶ τὸ σῶμα θεραπείας; δοκεῖ σοι ἐντίμους ἡγεῖσθαι ὁ τοιοῦτος; οἷον ἱματίων διαφερόντων κτήσεις καὶ ὑποδημάτων καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους καλλωπισμοὺς τοὺς περὶ τὸ σῶμα πότερον τιμᾶν δοκεῖ σοι ἢ ἀτιμάζειν, [64ε] καθ᾽ ὅσον μὴ πολλὴ ἀνάγκη μετέχειν αὐτῶν;
“And what of the other cares regarding the body? Does such a man seem to you to think them valuable? as getting special cloaks and shoes and the other personal adornments about the body, does he seem to you to honour [them] [64e] or dishonour [them], in as much as there is no great need for him to have a share in them?”
