ἀλλὰ πειράσομαι, ἔφη. πρῶτον δὲ Κρίτωνα τόνδε σκεψώμεθα τί ἐστιν ὃ βούλεσθαί μοι δοκεῖ πάλαι εἰπεῖν.
“So I will try,” he said. “But first let us ask Crito here what it is he appears to be to have been wanting to say for some time.”
τί δέ, ὦ Σώκρατες, ἔφη ὁ Κρίτων, ἄλλο γε ἢ πάλαι μοι λέγει ὁ μέλλων σοι δώσειν τὸ φάρμακον ὅτι χρή σοι φράζειν ὡς ἐλάχιστα διαλέγεσθαι;
“What is it, Socrates,” said Crito, “except that the man who is about to administer the poison to you has been telling me for some time that it is necessary to point out to you to engage in discussion as little as possible
φησὶ γὰρ θερμαίνεσθαι μᾶλλον διαλεγομένους, δεῖν δὲ οὐδὲν τοιοῦτον προσφέρειν [63ε] τῷ φαρμάκῳ: εἰ δὲ μή, ἐνίοτε ἀναγκάζεσθαι καὶ δὶς καὶ τρὶς πίνειν τούς τι τοιοῦτον ποιοῦντας.
For he says people get warm the more they talk and it is necessary to apply no such effect to the drug. [That] otherwise sometimes those who do some such thing are compelled to drink both twice and three times.”
