PLESSY V. FERGUSON [1896]

A
  • Louisiana law required separate rail cars
  • Homer Plessy = 1/8 black = boarded white car and refused leave
  • Supreme Court stated racial segregation = Consitutional so long as facilities = equal in kind and quality
  • Stated Southerners still upholding 14th Ammendment of equal protection under law

  • Blacks forbidden from jury and public office
  • Accused of crimes w/out court appearances
  • Lynch mobs dealt out vigilante justice [1000s lynched in 1890s]
