What are the Stages of Syphilis?
- Primary
- Secondary
- Early Latent
- Late Latent
- Tertiary
What are the most common Symptoms in Syphilis?
Asymptomatic / Mild Symptoms which go unreported
What are the Symptoms of Primary Stage Syphilis?
Local Ulcer (Chancre)
What are the Symptoms of Secondary Stage Syphilis?
- Rash
- Mucosal Ulceration
- Neuro-Symptoms
- Patchy Alopecia
What are the Symptoms of Early-Latent Stage Syphilis?
No Symptoms but Less than 2 years since caught
What are the Symptoms of Late-Latent Stage Syphilis?
No Symptoms but More than 2 years since caught
What are the Symptoms of Tertiary Stage Syphilis?
- Neurological
- Cardiovascular
- Gummatous (Skin Lesion)
Note - These are all Very Rare
What is the Epidemiology of Syphilis?
- 20 cases / year in Grampian
2. >90% of cases in Scotland are MSM
What are the Complications of Syphilis?
- Neurosyphilis
- a) Cranial Nerve Palsies are the Commonest
- b) Cardiac Neurosyphilis
- c) Aortal Neurosyphilis
- Congenital Syphilis
What is the Incubation Period of Syphilis?
9 to 90 days (Until Appearance of Chancre)
How is Syphilis Diagnosed?
- Clinical Signs
- Serology for:
- a) TP IgGEIA
- b) TPPA
- c) RPR
What is the Treatment of Early-Latent Syphilis?
Note - <2 Years and No-Neurological Symptoms
I.M. Injection of Benzathine Penicillin (2.4mu) Once
OR
Doxycycline (100mg) Per Oral, Bi-Daily for 2 Weeks
What is the Treatment of Late-Latent Syphilis?
Note - >2 Years and No-Neurological Symptoms
I.M. Injection of Benzathine Penicillin (2.4mu) Weekly for 3 Doses
OR
Doxycycline (100mg) Per Oral, Bi-Daily for 4 Weeks
