The Death of a Woman while Pregnant / Within 42 days of Termination of Pregnancy
What is Maternal Morbidity?
Severe Health Complications occurring in Pregnancy and Delivery - not resulting in Death
What is the Global Maternal Mortality and Morbidity?
289,000 deaths (2013)
> 99% in less developed countries
> 80% preventable
What are the measures of Maternal Mortality?
- Maternal Mortality Ratio - Risk associated with each pregnancy
- Maternal Mortality Rate - Takes into account the Obstetric Risk + Frequency of Risk
- Lifetime Risk of Maternal Death - Measure of risk of becoming pregnant as well as risk of death while pregnant
- Proportionate Mortality Ratio
What are the Methods for measuring Maternal Deaths?
- Facility Based

What is the Definition of Direct Deaths?
Deaths Related to Obstetric Complications during Pregnancy, Labour, or Puerperium or Resulting from any treatment received
What is the Definition of Indirect Deaths?
Deaths Associated with a Disorder, the effect of which is exacerbated by Pregnancy
What is the Definition of Late Deaths?
Deaths which occur > 42 days after the end of Pregnancy, but within 1 year
What is the Definition of Stillbirth?
Birth of a Dead Baby, after 20 / 24 / 28 weeks of Gestation or Weighing more than 500g
What is the Definition of Early Neonatal Death?
Dead of a Baby within the first week of life
What is the Definition of Late Neonatal Death?
Death of a Baby within the first 28 days of life
What is the Definition of Perinatal Mortality?
Includes Stilbirth and Neonatal Mortality
What is the Definition of Infant Mortality?
Death of an Infant within the First Year of Life
What is the Definition of Child Mortality?
Death of a Child within the first 5 years of life
