Purpose of quarantine regs
movement of DOD personnel and equipment entering or departing the United States or foreign countries/ports may introduce undesirable non-native species and disseminate communicable diseases
Quarantinable diseases
cholera diphtheria infectious tuberculosis plague smallpox yellow fever viral hemorrhagic fevers SARS influenza
Cholera
diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio Cholerae
* bacteria may also live in brackish rivers and coastal waters
Methods of control for Cholera
Imms
case report required by WHO and Medical Event Report
Isolation w/ hand washing and fly control
concurrent disinfection of feces and vomitus of linens and articles used by patient
Plague
disease of animals and humans caused by a bacterium named Yersinia Pestis
comes from being bitten by rodent flea
millions died in europe in middle ages
Bubonic plague
lymphadenitis develops in lymph nodes
fever is usually present
Pneumonic Plague
extensive involvement of lungs, sputum loaded with causative agent
respiratory droplets may serve as source of propagation
Methods of control of Plague
education
rat proofing of buildings/ships
storage and disposal of food and garbage
patient isolation and concurrent disinfection
clothing repellants
case reported to WHO and MER
Yellow Fever
very rare, a viral disease transmitted between humans by mosquito (Aedes Egypti)
Methods of control of Yellow Fever
insect repellent, protective clothing, and mosquito netting
imms - 9months and older
single dose every 10 years
Small Pox
last naturally acquired case Oct 1977 in Somalia
- global eradication certified in 1979 by WHO
stocks held in CDC Atlanta and Centre of Virology and Biotechnology, Russia
infection occurs via respiratory tract or skin inoculation
skin eruption within 2-4 days
Methods of control of Small Pox
Imms - vaccinia virus
Non-varicella, small pox like case suspected, immediate comms with local and state health agencies
