6.1.3: What is User Research and Why is it Important? Flashcards
Why should I use the word intuitive with caution
*Intuitive gives the impression that it’s supposed to just work. This will keep you closed minded. Users will interpret information differently from each other. Thus, providing you with a unique set of data that will most likely stray away from your perspective of what Intuitive should look like.
What is User Research
*Understanding the user’s needs and experiences when dealing with a defined problem area
What is the most important part about research?
*Defining a problem area with clear goals in mind
What is the false consensus effect or HIPPO
*HIPPO stands for Highest ??? Paid Person Opinion
False Consensus effect stems from having a herd mentality that prevents everyone who is involved from voicing their own perspectives.
What is the first question to ask in user research?
*Am I designing for the right problem?
Why should you ask for the organization’s research studies?
*They may have already answered the questions you were planning to search for in your user research
What is the second question to ask in user research?
*Am I collecting data from the right target market?
Ask the right question, in the right way, of the right people.
How do you define the question?
*
What should be avoided when phrasing questions?
*
What are the methods of user research?
*
What is a guerrilla approach?
*
What is an ethnographic study?
*observing people in their natural habitat
Why is it important to consider time and resources before partaking in research?
*You don’t want to waste your time solving the wrong issue and you want to be purposeful on your research to minimize use of resource. Once these values are estimated, then you will decide how you will conduct your research
What is the “New Coke” Cautionary Tale
*Project where coca-cola tried to compete with pepsi by doing a taste test but without user research, the project failed because they didn’t know that drinking in small pints rather than a big drink (and amongst other things) provides a better experience.
What are myths about user research?
*As a designer, don’t be complacent about the first solution
As a researcher, be open to being wrong
Be knowledgeable and develop your skills
