A

-characteristics used to classify other ppl

psych- complicated world; make things easier to think about by making categories

soci- put ppl in boxes; make people nameless, faceless- makes it superficial/alienating

not all stereotypes are bad but stereotyping in general isn’t great b/c we’d like to see ppl as individuals

Competence/x vs Warmth/y (each Low vs High)

Competence = person's status
Warmth = less competitive 

Paternalistic stereotype = low status/competence, not competitive / high warmth

  • housewives, elderly, disabled
  • look down on or ignore or dismiss them

High status/competence, not competitive/warmth = admiration stereotype
friends
-pride, positive feelings

Low warmth and competence/status = Contemptuous stereotype
poor
-resent, annoy, anger

Low warmth and high status = Envious stereotype
Rich ppl, feminists, Asians, Jews
-jealous, bitter, distrust

A

People are nervous about confirming a neg stereotype which affects performance – self-fulfilling prophecy
-reduce performance, self handicapping

A

-attitude towards person based on stereotype

Influenced by power (ability to achieve goals, such as wealth), prestige (respect/fame/job), class (SES- high, middle, low)
(threatening)

propaganda- large organizations use this to create prejudices

A

we evaluate others’ cultures based on our own
-similar to egocentrism- child sees everything w/ respect to themselves
in group, out group

  • -institutional- built into organization- system is designed to exclude or treat ppl differently
