6 Serous Membranes Flashcards
1
Q
What are serous membranes?
A
Thin two-part membranes which line certain closed cavities and envelop the viscera
They line:
The peritoneum (envelopes the abdominal organs)
The pleural sacs (envelop the lungs)
The pericardial sac (envelops the heart)
Secretes lubricating fluid to promote friction free movement of surrounding structutres
2
Q
Serous membrane structure
A
Simple squamous epithelium that secrete the watery lubricant
Thin layer of connective tissue that attaches the epithelium to adjacent tissues
Inner layer is the visceral
Outer layer is the parietal
