Which teeth are always removed by surgical extraction?
All canines dog, lower canines cat
Which teeth are removed by surgical extraction if routine approach fails?
Fractured or retained roots, ankylosed roots, excessive root curvature
Where does the end of the canine root line up with?
The second premolar
How much bone do you remove in a surgical extraction?
Up to 2/3 down
Which suture material do you use for dentals?
Quick resorbing (5 days), with a swaged on reverse-cutting needle
What must you avoid on the mandibular canines?
Middle mental foramen
How long must you wait between removing lower canines in a cat or small dog?
6 weeks
Do you fixate rostral mandible fractures?
No
Do you fixate caudal mandible fractures?
Yes
How can you assess fractured roots?
Vision of site, feel, radiographs
When do you NOT leave the root?
Any root projecting above bone, any periapical pathology or contamination, any tooth with necrotic pulp
When can you leave the root?
Lots of trauma to remove, removing has consequences e.g. fractured root, type II resorptive lesion
What is the main risk factor for dry socket?
Tissue trauma during exraction (heat or crushing)
