What is the Gallbladder?
A Sac-like structure on the Inferior Surface of the Liver
What are the 3 Histological Layers of the Gallbladder?
- Mucosa
- Muscularis Externa
- Serosa
What is contained within the Mucosa of the Gallbladder?
Rugae
What other Alimentary Organ contains Rugae?
The Stomach
What is the function of Rugae?
To allow for expansion under increasing Volume - this keeps the pressure on the contents the same
Is Bile produced by the Liver constantly?
Yes
What happens to the Bile when the Major Duodenal Papilla (Sphincter of Oddi) is closed?
It backs up throughout the Biliary Tree and fills up the Gallbladder
What is the function of the Gallbladder?
To store and concentrate Bile
How is the Bile concentrated by the Mucosal Layer of the Gallbladder?
The Mucosa of the Gallbladder constantly absorb Sodium Ions and Water
Between what strengths can bile then be concentrated?
Between 5 and 20 times
What causes the relaxation of the Major Duodenal Papilla?
Cholecystokinin - due to this controling the secretion of Pancreatic Enzymes
