5.6 Measurements of energy expenditure Flashcards
what are the types of energy expenditure measurments
- indirect calorimetry
- lactate sampling
- VO2 max test
- respiratory exchange ratio
what is indirect calorimetry
measures the consumption of oxygen and production of CO2 using a mask and metabolic cart (treadmill)
- can be used at rest or during exercise
- has 2 outcomes: resting energy expenditure, respiratory quotient
what is respiratory quotient
VCO2/VO2
what is respiratory energy expenditure
how much energy is used at rest - tells you how much to eat
what is Basal Metabollic Rate (BMR)
the minimum amount of energy required to sustain essential physiological functions
what is the thermic effect of food
energy required to eat, digest and absorb food
what does energy expenditure =
BMR + thermic effect of food
what is metabolic equivalent value
method of calculating expenditure if activities
what is lactate sampling
involves measuring the level of lactate in the bloodstream
- can be taken to understand at what point during exercise OBLA occurs
- done by taking a blood sample (very accurate)
what is the respiratory exchange ratio
the ratio of carbon dioxide produced compared to oxygen consumed in order to measure a performer’s reaction to exercise
- close to 1 = carbs
- close to 0.7 = fats
- measures the ratio of CO2 released to oxygen consumed
what is the VO2 max test
carried out on a treadmill or other cardiovascular equipment, used to calculate the maximum amount of oxygen that can be consumed per minute
