1.1 Health and Fitness of an individual Flashcards
definition of health
complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease and infirmity
definition of fitness
the ability to meet the demands of the environment
what is atherosclerosis
occurs when the arteries haden and narrow as they become clogged by fatty deposits
what is an atheroma
a fatty deposit found on the inner lining of an artery
what is angina and why does it occur
chest pain that occurs when the blood supply through the coronary arteries to the muscles of the heart is restricted
what is stroke volume
the volume of blood pumped out by the heart ventricles in each contraction
what is cardiac output
the volume of blood pumped out by the heart ventricles per minute
how does a stroke occur
not enough blood to the brain as burst or blocked blood vessel
how to prevent strokes with physical activity
keeping healthy through exercise increases blood flow to the brain, preventing the brain from being starved of oxygen
what is cholesterol
a waxy-fat substance that your body needs to live in the right quantities
how does physical activity affect cholesterol
helps to increase the amount of HDL and decrease the amount of LDL which prevents a build-up of deposits in blood vessels
what is high blood pressure
pressure of circulating blood against walls of blood vessels
how does physical activity affect blood pressure
helps to keep blood vessels flexible and prevents narrowing of these vessels.
how does physical activity decrease risk of heart disease
keeps the cardiac muscle strong and healthy which includes blood vessels allowing blood to pass through easily
what is the difference between maximal and submaximal exercise
max: can only be performed once
submax: repeated activity at a much lower intensity
