1.7 Venous return Flashcards
what is venous return
the flow of the blood back to the heart via the veins and specifically the vena cava
how does the skeletal muscle pump increase venous return
muscles contracting and relaxing are constantly changed shape so pushes on the nearby veins and pushes it back toward the heart
how does the respiratory pump increase venous return
breathing in and out causes contractions in many muscles like the diaphragm. This causes a constant change in the pressure of the thoracic (chest) cavity, compressing the veins and causing venous return.
how do pocket valves increase venous return
the valves close, in order to prevent backflow of blood throughout the veins
other aids of venous return
smooth muscle, gravity
aids of venous return
skeletal muscle pump, respiratory pump, pocket valves
what is blood pressure
forcse exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels
what does exercise do to blood pressure
increases it
