5.3 - Aquatic Ecosystems Flashcards
Primary Producers:
Sometimes called Autotrophs; Plant capturing energy from the sun and storing it
Photosynthesis:
The process of primary producers taking sunlight to convert CO2 and waste to sugars
Chemosynthesis:
Typically deep-sea primary producers like bacteria use energy stored in bonds of hydrogen sulfide to convert CO2 and water to sugars
Consumers:
Organism relying on other organisms for energy and nutrients
Cellular Respiration:
The process by which organisms use O2 to release chemical energy of sugars
Primary Consumers:
Organisms consuming producers
Detritivores:
Organisms consuming Detritus or nonliving organic matter
What are the 2 recyclers of an ecosystem:
- Detritvores
- Decomposers
Trophic Levels:
An organism’s ranking in its feeding hierarchy made of usually 3-4 levels
Entropy:
A way to describe something’s loss of energy
Trophic Level’s biomass:
The amount of living tissue contained
Food Chain:
A linear series of feeding relationships
Food Web:
A visual map of feed relationships and energy flow; better representation then food chains;
Keystone Species:
A Species with high influence on a community and ecosystem
