5.1 - Evolution Flashcards
Evolution:
Change over time
Biological Evolution:
A change in a population’s gene pool over time
Gene Pool:
All of the genes present in a population
Gene:
A sequence of DNA, coding for a specific trait
The 4 primary functions in evolution:
- Mutation
- Migration
- Genetic Drift
- Natural Selection
Mutation:
Changes in DNA
Genetic Drift:
Changes in genetic pool occurring by chance
Natural Selection:
Traits that improve an organism’s chance of survival or reproduction are passed down more frequently
Gene Flow:
Biological evolution changes do to population’s gene pool
Fitness:
How reproductively successful an organism is in its enviroment
Adaptation:
A heritable trait increasing one’s fitness
Artificial Selection:
The process of selection directed by humans
Speciation:
The process by which new species are created
Extinction:
Disappearance of species from the Earth
