4.3 - Population Growth Flashcards
Natality:
The rate at which individuals are born
Mortality:
The rate at which individuals die
Survivorship Curves:
To show the likelyhood of death between ages and populations
Immigration:
The arrival of individuals outside a given area
Emigration:
The departure of individuals from a given area
Migration:
A seasonal movement into or out of an area
Two basic forms of population growth:
- Exponetial
- Logistic
Exponential Growth:
When a population increases by a fixed amount
Logistic Growth:
A population’s exponential growth is slowed and stops due to limiting facctors
Limiting Factors:
Characteristics of an environment, limiting population growth
Carrying Capacity:
The largest population size a given environment can sustainably support
Density Dependant Factors:
Competition for limited resources
Ie - predators or disease
Density Independent Factors:
Limiting factors whose influence is not affected by population density;
Ie - fires, floods, or landslides
Biotic Potential:
The maximum ability to produce offspring in ideal conditions
Gestation:
The time it takes for an embryo or fetus to fully developed and be born
