5.2 Respiration Flashcards
What does respiration produce?
ATP
What is Glycolysis?
The first stage of anaerobic and aerobic respiration. It occurs in the cytoplasm and id an anaerobic process.
What is the first step of glycolysis?
Glucose + ATP -> Glucose Phosphate +ADP
What is the second step of glycolysis?
Glucose Phosphate + ATP -> Glucose Bisphosphate + ADP
What is the third step of glycolysis?
Glucose Bisphosphate + H2O -> 2 Triose Phosphate
What is the fourth and final step of glycolysis?
2 Triose Phosphate + 4 ADP + 2 NAD+ ->
2 Pyruvate + 4ATP + 2NADH
What occurs when 2 Triose Phosphate is converted into 2 Pyruvate?
Oxidation
What does anaerobic mean?
Lack of Oxygen
What occurs when respiration is only anaerobic?
Pyruvate + NAD -> Ethanol + NADH (plants)
Lactic Acid + NADH (animals)
Where does Glycolysis occur?
In the Cytoplasm
Where does Aerobic Respiration occur?
Mitochondrial Matrix
How does Pyruvate enter the mitochondrial matrix?
By Active Transport.
