1.3 Lipids Flashcards
What are triglycerides?
A molecule formed by the condensation of 1 Glycerol and 3 Fatty Acids
What are phospholipids?
A molecule formed by the condensation of 1 Glycerol and 2 Fatty Acids and 1 Phosphate. The phosphate makes this molecule polar.
What is the bond in a triglyceride?
The bond between the glycerol and fatty acid is an esther bond -o-
What is a saturated fatty acid?
A fatty acid where the chain has no double bonds. It is solid at room temperature.
What is an unsaturated fatty acid?
A fatty acid where the chain has a double bond causing a kink in the chain. This lowers the melting point so it is liquid at room temperature
What are the uses of phospholipids?
They form bilayer cell membranes forming hair pin shapes in rows due to polar nature of the molecule
