5.1(extra) Terrestrial Biome Specifics U5 Flashcards
Where is the Tundra biome located?
They are found below the ice caps of the Arctic, and extend across North America, to Europe, and Siberia in Asia.
What is the average temperature of the Tundra biome?
The average temperature during the winter is -30F. The average temperature during the summer is 37-54F.
What is the average annual precipitation of the Tundra biome?
Average precipitation is 6-10 inches.
What are typical flora adaptations of the Tundra biome?
Plants make adaptations like growing close to each other and close to the ground. Plants also usually have fuzzy coating that helps protect them from the cold and wind. The coating also keeps the heat and moisture. It also allows the plant to reproduce because it shields the seeds. The plants usually have small leaves to retain moisture. Plants have shallow roots because the soil is only usable through a thin layer.
What are typical fauna adaptations of the Tundra biome?
The animals in the tundra usually have thicker and warmer feathers/fur. They are usually larger and have shorter arms, legs and tails that help keep heat better and prevent heat loss. Most birds have two set of feathers to layer and contain warmth better. Some animals also hibernate during the winter.
Where is the Tropical Rainforest biome located?
Usually found between the latitudes of 23.5°N (the Tropic of Cancer) and 23.5°S (the Tropic of Capricorn). Specifically, there are tropical rainforests found in Central and South America, western and central Africa, western India, Southeast Asia, the island of New Guinea, and Australia.
What is the average temperature of the Tropical Rainforest biome?
The average temperature is 68-93F.
What is the average annual precipitation of the Tropical Rainforest biome?
The average annual precipitation is 50-200 inches.
What are typical flora adaptations of the Tropical Rainforest biome?
Trees grow taller to try and reach the sunlight and not get covered by other trees. They also develop drip tips. This is when plants have pointy tips that allow water to run off quickly so that it doesnt hurt the leaves.
What are typical fauna adaptations of the Tropical Rainforest biome?
The typical fauna adaptations include camouflage, nocturnal and diurnal ways of living, the use of poison, interdependence, and mutualism.
Where is the Grasslands biome located?
They are found between temperate forests at high latitudes and deserts at subtropical latitudes.
What is the average temperature of the Grasslands biome?
Very dependent on latitude and can range from -4-86F.
What is the average annual precipitation of the Grasslands biome?
The average annual precipitation is 10–35 inches.
What are typical flora adaptations of the Grasslands biome?
Plants have a big root system to prevent soil erosion.
What are typical fauna adaptations of the Grasslands biome?
Hooves to run easier, flat teeth to eat grass easier, enzymes for grasses, and light/brown fur for camoflauge
