4.4 Classification and Cladograms U4 Flashcards
What is Taxonomy?
science of naming and classifying organisms
What is the list from most inclusive to least inclusive of the hierarchical classification?
Domain(Eukarya)
Kingdom(Animalia)
Phylum(Chordata)
Class(Mammals)
Order(Carnivora)
Family(Canidae)
Genus(Vulpes)
Species(Vulpes Vulpes)
What are the three domains?
Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya
What is the domain: Bacteria?
1 prokaryotic kingdom - eubacteria
What is the domain: Archaea?
1 prokaryotic kingdom - archaeabacteria
What is the domain: Eukarya?
4 Eukaryotic kingdoms - “protista”, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia
How many kingdoms are there?
6
What is the kingdom: Protists?
Share a common ancestor with several other groups, very diverse
What is the kingdom: Fungi?
kingdom containing heterotrophic, multi or unicellular organisms with chitin in cell wall
What is the kingdom: Plantae?
kingdom containing autotrophic, multicellular organisms with cellulose in cell wall
What is the kingdom: Animalia?
Kingdom containing heterotrophic, multicellular organisms with no cell wall
What is Binomial Nomenclature?
A two name system for identifying organisms
first is genus and second is species
written with italics or underlined
after first use you can abbreviate the genus
Capitalize genus not species
Who created Binomial Nomenclature?
Carolus Linnaeus
What is a Dichotomous key?
Tool to identify organism based on desirable traits
What is Phylogeny?
diagram depicting evolutionary history or development of organisms with respect to time
What is a Cladogram?
shows hypothetical evolutionary relationships between organisms based on traits
How are cladograms and derived characters related?
Cladograms are constructed using derived characters
What is a derived character?
A trait that is new in the most recent common ancestor to a group and was then passed on to the descendants of the group
What is an Ancestral character
Traits found in the ancestor of groups in question
