5004 Carbon Monoxide Flashcards
Properties of carbon monoxide
Odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that is lighter than air
What is the measurement for air monitoring?
Parts per million
What does the investigating team do? What does the search team do? How many members are in each team?
Investigating team searches for potential source of CO
Search team searches for potential victims of CO poisoning
Team of two or more
What is the FAC’s role in carbon monoxide calls? when does the FAC dispatch a code yellow?
They determine the severity of the CO alarm, determine if occupants exhibit symptoms of CO poisoning, determine if all occupants are accounted for.
Code. Yellow is dispatched dispatched when there’s only an activated CO alarm.
What are the four things the first driving unit should do?
Give a short report
Establish command
Determine if they are victims
Request more resources as needed
What are the incident requirements?
Search the building
Evaluate occupants
Determine cause of alarm
Secure the cause and facility
Recognize danger of explosive gas
Establish RIT possible as soon as possible
Notify occupants verballyand in writing form 414
What conditions must be met to reoccupy facility?
Cause must be determined and secured
CO levels must be below 10 PPM or detector reset and working properly
Occupants must be notified verbally, and in writing with a form 414
If a CO monitor is available, how should you proceed?
Take CO levels prior to ventilating and securing potential sources, note areas of the highest concentration
Ventilate the premises
Monitor CO levels during ventilation
Look for obvious potential sources of CO and secure them
If I see a monitor is not available, how should you proceed?
The residence can be re-occupied if:
No one is exhibiting signs of CO poisoning
The alarm is reset and operating correctly
Potential sources have been identified and secured
Premises has been ventilated
Responsible party has been notified
Signs and symptoms of mild CO exposure
Flu like symptoms
Slight headache
Fatigue
Nausea
Vomiting
Signs and symptoms of medium CO exposure
Severe headache
Drowsiness
Confusion
Fast heart rate
Signs and symptoms of extreme CO exposure
Unconsciousness
Convulsions
Death
What are the three levels of CO2 concentration?
10 ppm or less - acceptable for healthy individuals
10-35 ppm - with an acceptable levels for eight hours, a day of exposure in the workplace, an acceptable for a long term residential occupation SCB a used is at discretion of IC
Greater than 35 PPM - exceeds acceptable level of continued exposure, must wear SCBA
Potential sources of CO in the home
Furnace or hot water heater
Using stove for heating or faulty/dirty oven
Wood, stove, fireplace, or chimney
Running a vehicle in adjacent garage
Using a barbecue or charcoal in or around a structure
Faulty chimney flues
Poorly maintained or faulty cooling systems
