5. personality Flashcards
factor analysis
method of analyzing patterns of correlations in order to extract mathematically defined factors which underlie and help make sense of patterns
cattell’s 16 factor theory of personality
- common traits : everyone has
- unique traits: only certain ppl
- surface traits: thru behavior
- source traits: like ego, more internal
- no one was able to prove or replicate this theory
five-factor “big five” theory of personality
- a persons personality is best described in terms of their score on each of five trait dimensions
- neuroticism
- extraversion
- openness to experience
- agreeableness
- conscientiousness
Fiske criticism on cattells 16 factor theory of personality
Fiske saw that many of cattells 16 factor theory personality traits strongly correlated with each other so he said fuck it im making something more simple, hence the big five
trait
- relatively stable predisposition to behave a certain way
- -
cattells use of factor analysis to develop trait theory
- first well-known trait theory
-
typological and
ideographic view
nomographic???
- everyone has same trait but we have it to different degrees , paul and i are aggressive
- ideographic; i got trait but paul does not
- nomographic: we have the same trait but to different degrees
4 steps of factor analysis
- collect data about vairables and feed them to the FA program
- goal is to group up the factors to reduce them. you just link em together so it’s less confusing.
cattell
- tryna be empirical
measurement of big 5
self report data
cardinal traits
when someone has such a strong trait that it dominates their whole personality
