Q

What is a Stopway? (2)

A
  • A defined rectangular area on the ground at the end of the take-off run available prepared as a suitable area in which an aircraft can be stopped in the case of an abandoned take-off
  • Must have same width as runway

Q

What is a Clearway? (2)

A
  • An area which may be provided beyond the end of the TORA which is free from objects which may cause a hazard to aeroplanes in flight
  • It provides an area over which an aeroplane can safely transit from lift-off to the required screen height

Q

What is a Starter Extension? (3)

A
  • Near the start of take-off run, aircraft moving slowly
  • Strip width reduced to provide distance from extension edge for wing overhang, plus 7.5m or 20% of wingspan of largest aeroplane whichever greater
  • Then strip width increases at splay of not less than 20% each side until full visual strip width achieved relevant to runway code number

Q

What is the RESA? (10)

A

RESA - Runway End Safety Area

  • Intended to minimise the risks arising when an aeroplane overruns or undershoots a runway
  • Shall be provided at each end of the strip enclosing Runways Code 3 & 4 and Instrument Runway Code 1 & 2
  • Declared distances should be reduced to accommodate RESA
  • Not essential for visual runways Code 1 & 2
  • Normally minimum length 90m Code 3 & 4 minimum length 30m Code 1 & 2 (instrument)
  • ILS localiser usually (or boundary fence) the limit of RESA
  • Width should be twice that of associated runway symmetrically disposed about extended centreline
  • Surface not to the same standard as graded area but must give unimpeded access to emergency services
  • If introduction of RESA could adversely affect operations, the CAA must be consulted

Q

What is TORA? (2)

A

TORA - Take-off Run Available

This is the length of runway available and suitable for the ground run of an aeroplane taking off. In most cases it will correspond to the length of the runway pavement

Q

What is TODA? (3)

A

TODA - Take-off Distance Available

This is the length of the TORA plus the length of any associated clearway

Where no Clearway exists, the TORA will equal the TODA

Q

What is ASDA? (3)

A

ASDA - Accelerate-Stop Distance Available

This is the length of the TORA plus the length of any associated stopway

Where no stopway exists, the ASDA will equal the TORA

Q

What is LDA? (3)

A

LDA - Landing Distance Available

This is the length of the runway which is available and suitable for the ground landing run of an aeroplane

Runway 04 has a displaced threshold, making its LDA shorter than runway 22
