What is the ATIS? (10)

A

ATIS - Automatic Terminal Information Service

  • Information to help pilot make decisions about his approach to land or take-off
  • Message should not exceed 30 seconds where
    practicable
  • Enables reduced RTF loading
  • Can be either Departure or Departure/Arrival ATIS (greater frequency protection required)
  • Messages consecutively coded using phonetic alphabet
  • Rapid weather changes given direct through ATC
  • ATCOs must obtain readback of pressure settings
  • Pilots to acknowledge ATIS receipt
  • If non-current letter given details to be passed by ATC
