5/29/24 - Lecture 29: Ecosystems Flashcards
Regulating services
The benefit provided by ecosystem processes that regulate natural phenomena (water purification, decomposition, pollination, carbon storage, climate regulation, erosion control)
Cultural services
A non-material benefit that contributes to the development and cultural advancement of people (ecosystem roles in local culture, recreation, creativity inspired by interactions with nature)
Watershed
An area of land that drains water, sediment, and dissolved materials to a common receiving body or outlet
Watershed ecosystem
Interacting biotic and abiotic components within a watershed’s boundaries
Mangrove forests
Ecosystem generally found along sheltered coasts, grow in saline soil and brackish water, subject to periodic fresh- and salt-water inundation
Biomagnification
The increase in concentration of a substance (like nitrogen, mercury, PCBs) in tissues of organisms at successively higher trophic levels
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
Highly carcinogenic chemical compounds, formerly used in industrial and consumer products
CO2 fertilization effect
Greater CO2 increases water use efficiency and stimulates more photosynthesis
