4/8/24 - Lecture 5: Adaptations to Stress Flashcards
Adaptation
Evolutionary change in genotype that increases performance
Acclimation
Change in phenotype within an individual’s lifetime that increases performance
Q10
The multiplicative factor by which a reaction rate increases for each increase of 10°C
Ectotherms
Body temperature primarily determined by external conditions
Endotherms
Body temperature primarily determined by internal, metabolic energy
What area of mammals’ brains regulates temperature?
The hypothalamus, which uses negative feedback to regulate temperature
How do ECTOTHERMS regulate temperature?
By using morphological and behavioral mechanisms
How do ENDOTHERMS deal with cold?
By using morphological, physiological, and behavioral mechanisms
Countercurrent heat exchange
When heat is exchanged between blood vessels carrying blood in opposite directions. Blood flowing into muscles is warmed by blood flowing out, allowing animals to conserve heat
How do plants regulate temperature?
Through morphology and behavior
C4 plants
Spatial separation of photosynthesis and CO2 capture
CAM plants
Temporal separation of photosynthesis and CO2 capture
What factors influence probability of being eaten?
The probabilities of detection, being caught, and being eaten
