4/10/24 - Lecture 7: Population Growth 1 Flashcards
Mark recapture method
Capture, mark, and release M individuals
Recapture another set of n individuals later
Count how many of n were marked from before, m
Mark recapture CALCULATIONS
N/M = n/m
N: population size
M: initial captured individuals
n: recaptured individuals
m: recaptured marked individuals
What is the rate of change of population size as an equation?
Rate of population change = birth rate - death rate + immigration rate - emigration rate
Closed population
Immigration or emigration negligible; changes dominated by births and deaths
Open population
Immigration and emigration substantial
Equation for population with respect to time
N(t) = N0e^(rt)
N0: initial population
r: constant
t: time
What is the relationship of population density on per capita fecundity and mortality?
Often the higher the population density, the lower the per capita fecundity and higher the mortality
Logistic population growth equation
dN/dt = r(1-N/K)N
dN/dt: rate of change of population with respect to time
r: intrinsic rate of growth
N: total population
K: carrying capacity
