4/12/24 - Lecture 8: Population Growth 2 Flashcards
Survivorship (lx)
Proportion of individuals surviving to age x
(This is a lowercase L sub x)
Direct method to find survivorship
Following a cohort of individuals over time
Cohort
A group of individuals born around the same time
Indirect method to find survivorship
Determine the age of death from remains
What is a type III survivorship curve?
High juvenile mortality but low adult mortality (for example, a big tree)
What is a type II survivorship curve?
Mortality independent of age
What is a type I survivorship curve?
Low mortality until the later stages of life
How does Type I and III life expectancy change with age?
Type III survivorship increases with age, and Type I survivorship decreases with age
Net reproductive number R0 (R sub 0)
Average number of offspring produced by an individual in its lifetime
mx for life tables
Average number of offspring produced at a certain age
