Aeronautical Decision Making Process
PAVES checklist is based on carefully making a decision based on the Pilot, Aircraft, Environment, External Pressures, and Situation and making sure all of these are safe for flight
Depressants
reduce the bodies functioning in many areas symptoms include lower blood pressure, reduced mental processing, and slow motor and reaction responses
Hangover
Impairment of alcohol over a long time
Pain Killers
Two Classes: Analgesics and Anesthetics these are usually pain medications side effects of Analgesics include mental confusion, dizziness, headaches, nausea, and vision problems. Anesthetics can cause deaden pain or loss of consciousness
Stimulants
Excite nervous system and produce an increase in alertness and activity effects are appetite suppression, fatigue reduction, anxiety, and drastic mood swings
Antibiotics
produce dangerous side effects such as balance disorders, hearing loss, nausea, and vomiting
Over the counter and Illegal substance
OTC must be approved and not have affecting side effects such as drowsiness or effects skill in a motor vehicle
Illegal substance have no place in aviation at all
Finding Substances that are safe
67.113, Your AME or Physician will identify the medication you use is safe for flight or not
The CFRs prohibit pilots from performing crewmember duties while using any medication that affects the faculties in any way contrary to safety. The safest rule is not to fly as a crewmember while taking any medication, unless approved to do so by the FAA.
Types of Visual Illusions
Auto Kinesis, False Horizons, Landing Illusions, and Flicker Vertigo, Coriolis illusion, Graveyard spiral, Somatogravic illusion, Elevator illusion, and Inversion illusion
