#3 Flashcards
Stagnant Hypoxia defined
Oxygen deficiency due to poor circulation of the blood (common cause g’s)
Histotoxic Hypoxia defined
Inability of cells to effectively use oxygen. Impairment of cellular respiration is caused by alcohol and other drugs narcotics/poisons
Blocking Hypoxia
Maintain good physical health, (increased energy usage physical or mental increases risk of hypoxia) avoid hypoxia by flying at lower altitudes or using supplemental oxygen
Hypoxia Symptoms
Headache, Decreased reaction time, impaired judgement, euphoria, visual impairment, drowsiness, tingling, numbness, blue fingernails and lips, and limp muscles
Hyperventilation Defined and Symptoms
Rapid or deep breathing which can be caused by emotional tension, anxiety, or fear
Symptoms of Hyperventilation include headache, decreased reaction time, impaired judgement, euphoria, vision impairment, drowsiness, lightheaded or dizziness, tingling, clammy, paleness, numbness, and muscle spasms
Overcoming Hyperventilation
Breathe into a bag, breathe slowly, or talk aloud
Hyperventilation is a result of overwhelmed signals, calm you or others to lower the effects or get rid of it
Hyperventilation can occur while breathing supplemental oxygen
Spatial Disorientation Defined
Spatial Disorientation is caused by sensory inputs being contradictory or confusing to the brain, the brain primarily relies upon sight to determine orientation. Peripheral vision is very strong in relaying body position to your brain.
Spatial Disorientation Night Defined
Darkness or limited visibility your brain relies heavily on visual sense, interpret the flight instruments for accurate information
Increased effects of Spatial Disorientation caused by
Fatigue, Anxiety, intake of alcohol or other drugs increase susceptibility and visual illusions
Overcoming the effects of Spatial Disorientation
Believing your instruments and their indications, regardless of how your body feels
Peripheral Vision is highly important for orientation, look for correct mental images of your position, altitude, or movement in relation to what is actually happening
