#2 Flashcards

1
Q

Ear and Sinus blockage

A

Ear pain usually caused by different pressures within the ear and outside the ear an upper respiratory infection, such as a cold or sore throat, or a nasal allergic condition can produce enough congestion around the eustachian tube to make equalization difficult.(During descent the pressure will be higher than the pressure in the ear, slow descent rate to stop the pain)

Q

Tootheache

A

Expansion of air trapped in cavities caused by imperfect fillings, damaged root canals, and dental abscesses can produce pain from rapid decompression

Q

Gastrointestinal Pain

A

Gastrointestinal tract contains about one quart of gas, as altitude increases this gas expands, keep from having excess gas prior to flight

Q

Scuba Diving

A

Reduction of pressure from increase in altitude can cause decompression sickness also know as the “bends” this happens when nitrogen in your body comes out of the solution and forms bubbles in tissue and bloodstream (this is very serious and can cause extreme pain, paralysis, and sometimes death) after scuba diving give 24 hours for your body rid itself of nitrogen

Q

Hypoxic Hypoxia defined

A

The decrease of oxygen molecules at sufficient pressure can lead to hypoxic hypoxia, time of useful consciousness changes depending on lack of oxygen at different altitudes

Q

Hypemic Hypoxia defined

A

When your body is not able to carry oxygen to cells in your body, this is a result of lack of oxygen in blood

any factor that interferes or displaces oxygen that is attached to the blood’s hemoglobin can cause hypemic hypoxia

Q

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

A

Most common hypemic hypoxia due to carbon monoxide attaching itself to the hemoglobin 200 times easier then oxygen. Carbon Monoxide is colorless and odorless

Q

Carbon Monoxide Symptoms

A

Carbon monoxide causes loss of muscular control and hypoxia symptoms

Solve Carbon monoxide poisoning by turning of heater or cause of hypoxia, open windows, and land as soon as possible)
