4th exam Flashcards
loss of sensitivity to pain w/o unconsciousness or sleep
analgesia
anesthesia limited to a local area
local anesthesia
anesthesia limited to a larger, although limited area (generally, an extremity)
regional anesthesia
loss of consciousness in addition to loss of sensation; ideally includes:
- hypnosis
- hyporeflexia
- analgesia
- muscle relaxation
can be produced w/ a single drug or by combination of drugs
general anesthesia
general anesthesia that allows surgery to be performed
surgical anesthesia
surgical anesthesia produced by a combination of two or more drugs or anesthetic techniques, each contributing its own pharmacological effects; included
- tranquilizers
- narcotics
- nitrous oxide
- muscle relaxants
balanced anesthesia
higher level of general anesthesia produced by pre-anesthetic medication
basal anesthesia
a CNS state characterized by
- catalepsy
- good peripheral analgesia, and
- altered consciousness
patients are dissociated from their environment
dissociative anesthesia
state in which there’s malleable rigidity of the limbs and the patient is generally unresponsive to stimuli; the animal tends to remain in any position of placement
catalepsy
trance resembling sleep from which the patient can be oblivious to pain, with or without hypnosis
narcosis
hypnosis & analgesia produced by the combination of a neuroleptic drug and analgesic drug
neuroleptanalgesia
tranquilizer; drug that
— induces calmness
— does not induce sleep or drowsiness
neuroleptic / ataractic agent
mild degree of CNS depression in which the patient is awake but calm; may result in sleep or drowsiness
sedation
state of calmness where the patient is awake, relaxed, and unconcerned with its surroundings and potentially indifferent to minor pains
tranquilization / neurolepsis / ataraxia
