4C Apoptosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is apoptosis/programmed cell death
A
The controlled death of
cells in the body.
2
Q
Purpose
A
When a cell begins to:
- Malfunction
- Damaged
- Unnecessary
Remove them
3
Q
Identify + outline the mitochondrial pathway/intrinsic pathway
A
- Cell stress (damage/malfunctioning)
- Mitochondria detect this
- Mitochondria release cytochrome C
- Cytochrome C binds to cytosolic proteins to form an apoptosome
- Apoptosome activates capase enzymes
4
Q
Identify + outline the death receptor pathway
A
- Death Signalling molecules released by other cells (e.g. immune cells)
- These molecules are recognised by death receptors
- When these molecules bind to the receptors, caspase enzymes is released into the cell
- Caspase enzyme triggers apoptosis
5
Q
Outline the three stages of apoptosis now that it has been activated
A
- Capase enzyme activated
- Digestion of cell contents
- Capase cleave proteins
- Organelles break down - Cell shrinks as contents break down
- Membrane blebbing and breakage
- Cytoskeleton digested
- Membrane wraps and detaches from cell in apoptotic bodies
6
Q
After - Phagocytosis
A
- Endocytosis of apoptotic bodies by phagocytes
