4A The Prokaryotic Cell Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
Define Binary Fission/Purpose/e.g.
A
- A type of asexual reproduction (method
of reproduction that produces
genetically identical cells without
the fusion of gametes) That Prokaryotic Cells use to replicate + reproduce - Fast Process (exponential growth) (Bacteria doubles in size every 20 minutes)
2
Q
Identify + outline the 6 stages of Binary Fission
A
- Prokaryotic cell before replication (one parent cell)
- Circular Chromosomes - uncoil + DNA and Plasmid replicates
- Cell elongation (cell extends in size + duplicated chromosomes and plasmid move to opposite sides of the cell)
- Cytokinesis (a septum is created)
- New Cell wall + membrane formed
- Two genetically identical daughter cells formed
