Q

Define Binary Fission/Purpose/e.g.

A
  • A type of asexual reproduction (method
    of reproduction that produces
    genetically identical cells without
the fusion of gametes) That Prokaryotic Cells use to replicate + reproduce
  • Fast Process (exponential growth) (Bacteria doubles in size every 20 minutes)

Q

Identify + outline the 6 stages of Binary Fission

A
  1. Prokaryotic cell before replication (one parent cell)
  2. Circular Chromosomes - uncoil + DNA and Plasmid replicates
  3. Cell elongation (cell extends in size + duplicated chromosomes and plasmid move to opposite sides of the cell)
  4. Cytokinesis (a septum is created)
  5. New Cell wall + membrane formed
  6. Two genetically identical daughter cells formed
