2C Cellular Size + Shape Flashcards
1
Q
Why are cells so small?
A
- It is more efficient to transport
nutrients and remove wastes - They have different purposes
Benefits:
1. Efficient exchange of materials with the extracellular environment
2. Faster intercellular transport
2
Q
Surface Area to Volume Ratio
A
- Calculating volume:
- L by W by H
- Calculating SA:
- The area of any one side calculated
- Multiply this side by the no. of sides
3.
- SA divided by volume
- Convert into SA:V ratio
- Greater difference between surface area to volume ratio = smaller objects = Larger SA:V ratio
- Objects = same volume + larger SA = Higher SA:V + longer lengths rather than compactness
