what does a CBC w/ diff tell you?
RBC and WBC -> look at WBC >4-11 to check for infection
what does the sed rate tell you?
marker for inflammation within an individual ; could also use c-reactive prtn
CXR for sarcoidosis
white nodules - hilar fullness
what would be found with a biopsy of lymph node and lung tissue of sarcoidosis patient?
granulmomatous inflammation consistent with sarcoidosis
prevalence of sarcoidosis
1/100,000 caucasians
40/100,000 blacks
granulomas form and grow in this phase, symptoms develop and scar tissue can form
active phase
inflammation subsides, the granulomas shrink or stay the same size - but the scars remain and continue to produce symptoms
inactive phase

genetic infectious propionobacterium vitamin D dysregulation hyperprolactinemia autoimmune
pulmonary symptoms of sarcoidosis
- hemoptysis
- SOB
- dry cough
- wheezing
- pain in chest
how many stages of sarcoidosis are there?
5 total from zero to four
painful bumps at the ankles and skin
erythema nodosum
disfiguring sores on nasal passages, cheeks, ears, fingers
lupus pernio
musculoskeltal symptoms of sarcoidosis
joint pain similar to arthritis but non-erosive and not radiographically evident
muscle aches and pains
neuro-sarcoidosis
5-10% of patients
–> myelopathy, cranial neuropathy and encephalopathy
what is heerfrodt syndrome?
uveitis
parotid gland enlargement
fever and cranial neuropathy (VII- bells palsy)
