45: Introduction to Anesthesia - Drown Flashcards
goal of anesthesia
maintain physiologic homeostasis
lack of memory of the perioperative and intraoperative period
amnesia
pain control in the perioperative and intraoperative period
analgesia
block the Ach receptors at the neuromuscular junction of striated muscle to provide relaxation o fthe major muscle groups in the body
neuromuscular blockade
use to keep the pt still during surgery
what is a MET metabolic equivalent?
indicator of functional status
magic number of MET for increased perioperative cardiac risk
unable to meet a 4-MET demand during most normal daily activities
inability to climb _ flights of stairs or walk __ blocks is one important indicator of poor functional status and an increased risk of postoperative cardiopulmonary complications after non-cardiac surgery

METS
major predictors —> delay or cancel surgery
recent MI or severe angina, decompensated heart failure or significant valvular heart disease, significant arrhythmias, recent PCI
ASA classifiaction
class 1- 6
normal healthy patient
ASA class I
mild systemic disease such as HTN with one med, smoker
ASA class II
severe systemic disease such as HTN on more than one med, prior stroke or heart attack
ASA class III
severe systemic disease that is constant threat to life - terminal cancer, oxygen dependent COPD
ASA class IV
not expected to live without operation
ASA class V
organ donor with brain death
ASA class VI
