4.11 Basic concepts of organic chemistry Flashcards
Homologous series
a family of compounds with similar properties.
Saturated Hydrocarbon
A hydrocarbon with no double bonds
Unsaturated Hydrocarbon
A hydrocarbon with at least one double bond.
Aliphatic
Carbon atoms are joined to each other in unbranching or branched chains, or non-aromatic rings.
Alicyclic
Carbon atoms joined together in ring structures, with or without branches.
Aromatic
Some or all the carbons are found in a benzene ring.
Structural isomers
compounds with the same molecular formula but a different structural formula.
Homolytic fission
When a covalent bond breaks and each atom gets an equal number of electrons.
Heterolytic fission
When a covalent bond breaks and one atom gets both electrons and the other gets none.
