2.5 Electrons and Bonding Flashcards
Atomic orbitals
A volume of space which can hold a maximum of 2 electrons, if they are spin paired.
Sub-Shell
A set of orbitals of the same type in the same energy level
Energy level
All of the orbitals and sub-shells with the same “principal quantum number”
s - orbital shape
spherical
p - orbital shape
dumb-bell
No. of p orbitals per subshell
3 (from n = 2)
No. of s orbitals per subshell
1 (from n = 1)
No. of d orbitals per subshell
5 (from n = 3)
No. of f orbitals per subshell
7 (from n = 4)
Covalent bond - in terms of orbitals
The overlap of attomic orbitals each containing one electron.
Dative covlent bond
a covalent bond in which the shaired pair of electrons has been supplied by one of the bonding atoms only.
