2.6 Shapes of Molecules and Intermolecular Forces Flashcards
V.S.E.P.R Theory
Electron pairs have like charges so they repel each other that produces the shapes of molecules.
Electronegativity
The ability to attract electrons in a covalent bond
Permanent dipole
a molecule with a partial charge.
London forces
Induced dipoles creating intermolecular forces
Non-polar bonds
the bonded electrons are shared equally
Polar bonds
The bonded electron pairs are shared unequally.
Hydrogen bonding
the bonding that occurs between a FONCl and Hydrogen
Why is ice less dense than water?
Hydrogen bonds hold the water molecules in an open lattice structure. Therefore the water molecules in ice are further apart.
Why does water have a high melting/boiling point?
H bonds stronger than London Forces that take more energy to break.
