4.1 classification of skills Flashcards
open closed skill continuum
how much the environment affects skills usually closed skills don’t involve others like swimming and open involve many others like football dribbling
closed skill
not affected by the environment
open skill
heavily affected by the environment
pacing continuum
self paced - externally paced - affected by how much the performer affects the pacing of it
self paced
usually closed skill and has high level of control over the pacing - javelin thrower
external paced skills
the environment affects the skill
gross fine skills continuum
concerned with the precision of movement
gross
weightlifting
fine
intricate movements
continuity continuum
how well defined the beginning and end of the skill is
discrete
clear beginning clear end short skills
serial
multiple discrete skills like the triple jump
continuous
no obvious beginning or end set pattern - like cycling - doesn’t end at set point
organisation (high low)
how difficult it is to separate the subroutines
low organised
easy to break up into sub routines like tennis serve
high organisation
had to separate subroutines like dribbling in basketball
task analysis
teacher of skills understanding what needs to be taught - what sub routines need to be fixed
how to practice open/closed
open - practice over many situations
closed - repetition variation doesn’t matter
how to practice discrete serial continuous skills
discrete - taught as a whole
serial - breaking them down into subroutines
continuous - practiced as a whole
kinaesthetic sense
the performer can feel the true nature of the skill
difficulty continuum
how many judgements in a skill or not
simple
small amount of judgements
complex
large number of judgements need to be made
