4. Components of Blood Part Two Flashcards
What is chemotaxis?
movement directed by chemical stimuli
What is the main role of white blood cells?
fight infection and dispose of debris
What two white blood cells can move by amoeboid motility?
macrophages and neutrophils
What are the three categories and six types of white blood cells?
monocytes = macrophages
lymphocytes = T and B cells
granulocytes = neutrophil, eosinophil, and basophil
What is the role of macrophages?
phagocytose debirs and microorganisms
What is the role of B cells?
mature into plasma cells and produce antibodies
What is the role of T cells?
kill virus infected cells, tumor cells, and reject tissue grafts; control the immune response
What is the role of neutrophils?
phagocytose bacteria resulting in pus
What is the role of eosinophils?
destroy parasites
What is the role of basophils?
stores and release histamine
