3. Hemodynamics Flashcards
What is hemodynamics?
the study of blood flow
What is the driving force for blood flow?
difference in pressure from arteries to veins
What is the important equation for resistance of blood flow?
Ohms Law
How can blood pressure be varied?
- increase in force (stroke volume)
- increase in rate (beats per minute)
What is the principal determinent of resistance?
degree of constriction of arteriolar smooth muscle; precapillary sphincters
What portion of the nervous system controls peripheral resistance?
sympathetic
How does the sympathetic nervous system control peripheral resistance?
basal level of pressure is provided by a constant level of norepinephrine released by sympathetic postganglionic neurons innervating precapillary sphincters
What is adrenergic tone?
constant sympathetic nervous system output on precapillary sphincters
What is systemic arterial pressure?
force per unit area exerted by blood on the walls of arteries
What do the numbers of a blood pressure reading mean?
top number = systolic pressure
bottom number = diastolic pressure
