1. Overview of Circulatory Flashcards
What are the five main functions of the circulatory system?
- distributes nutrients from the digestive tract, liver, and adipose tissue
- transports metabolic waste products from tissues to the excretory system
- transports hormones from the endocrine glands to targets
- maintains homeostasis
- hemostasis
What is perfusion?
the flow of blood through a tissue
What is ischemia?
inadequate blood flow
What is hypoxia?
adequate circulation but a lack of oxygen
What are arteries?
vessels that carry blood away from the heart at a high pressure
What are veins?
vessels that carry blood back to the heart at a low pressure
What are arterioles?
smaller vessels that branch off from arteries
What are capillaries?
very small vessels that branch off from arterioles
What are venules?
small veins that pass into larger veins leading back to the heart
What is the inner lining of all blood vessels composed of?
thin layer of endothelial cells
What are the four imoprtant roles of blood vessels?
vasodilation/vasoconstriction
inflammation
angiogenesis
thrombosis
Where does the right side of the heart pump blood to?
lungs
Where does the left side of the heart pump blood to?
the body
What is pulmonary circulation?
flow of blood from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart
What is systemic circulation?
flow of blood from the heart to the body and back to the heart
